England sealed their series victory over Ireland in convincing fashion, crushing the visitors by six wickets in the second one-day international at Derby. The hosts' comfortable win was largely down to the outstanding performance of fast bowler Issy Wong, who claimed her first international five-wicket haul to dismiss Ireland for 165.
Wong's impressive display had a significant impact on the match, as she took crucial wickets to restrict Ireland's batting line-up. The experienced duo of Gaby Lewis and Orla Prendergast failed to make an impact, with Wong bowling Lewis for 19 and then dismissing Prendergast for 25 off Mady Villiers' delivery.
Amy Hunter was the only Irish batter to put up some resistance, scoring a gritty 64 before falling to Wong's fifth wicket. However, her efforts were not enough to save Ireland from a heavy defeat as they lost their last six wickets for just 25 runs.
In contrast, England's batting line-up made light work of the chase, reaching their target in 23 overs. Openers Maia Bouchier and Sophia Dunkley started positively with a stand of 54 in seven overs, but their innings was marred by careless running and dismissals.
Bouchier, who scored 45 off 31 balls, inexplicably ran out Dunkley for 20 before also being caught off a short ball from spinner Kia McCartney. Alice Capsey was pinned lbw for one, while Jodi Grewcock chipped one to mid-wicket for 24.
However, all-rounder Freya Kemp and Dani Gibson safely steered England to victory with an unbroken stand of 41. Their partnership ensured that the hosts reached their target without any further hiccups.
