The 2026 Formula 1 season is reaching its climax as it heads to Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The event will take place from September 24-26 and marks a significant change in schedule, with the race now being held on a Saturday instead of its previous spot in the first half of the year. This decision was made following a request from the Azerbaijan promoter and relevant government stakeholders, according to Formula 1 officials.
The last time out saw Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli extend his championship lead to 81 points by winning the inaugural Madring Spanish Grand Prix. Lando Norris of McLaren secured pole position with an impressive qualifying lap but was unable to hold on to the lead due to a virtual safety car period, ultimately finishing in third place.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen took second place after initially giving up position to Lewis Hamilton early in the race, which benefited Antonelli. This weekend, Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar will return to action after missing the past three races with a wrist injury. His comeback is expected to bring an added level of competition and excitement to the event.
The weather forecast for Baku is looking promising, with sunny conditions predicted throughout the entire event. Thursday's practice sessions are expected to reach highs of 28C, while qualifying on Friday is forecasted to be around 25C. Saturday's 51-lap race, which will start at 3pm local time, is also expected to be about 25C with a moderate breeze.
Commentary for the event will be available across BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Sounds, and the BBC Sport website and app. Fans can also ask their smart speakers to 'Play 5 Live' for easy access to the coverage.
