The Women's Super League has seen its fair share of high-profile signings this summer, but one move that has gone somewhat under the radar could prove to be the smartest deal of all. Kirsty Hanson, a 28-year-old Scotland international, swapped Aston Villa for Tottenham in what appears to be a shrewd recruitment move by manager Martin Ho.
Hanson's debut for Spurs was nothing short of impressive as she scored twice in a 3-1 win over West Ham on Sunday. Her first goal showcased her power and precision, looping the ball into the net off the goalkeeper's foot after being one-on-one with the opposition player. However, it was her second goal that truly stood out - a beautifully curled shot into the far top corner from her left foot.
This performance is no surprise to those who have followed Hanson's career. Last season, she was the third-highest scorer in the WSL despite Villa finishing ninth in the table. With 12 goals in 22 matches, only Khadija Shaw and Alessia Russo scored more. Her impressive form has continued into this campaign, with Hanson starting where she left off.
Hanson's journey to Tottenham began at Manchester United, where she played a key role in the development of the professional women's team before struggling for regular game time. She then joined Villa on loan in 2022 and went on to make 26 goals in 100 appearances, earning two player-of-the-season awards.
In an interview with BBC Sport earlier this month, Hanson spoke about her decision to leave Villa and join Spurs.
