The opening wave of NHL free agency in July 2026 delivered plenty of intrigue, with veterans staying put, champions on the move and several franchises committing to their young cores.
Alex Ovechkin ended retirement speculation by re-signing with the Washington Capitals on a one-year deal worth 4.25 million dollars, keeping the legendary forward in the only NHL colours he has ever worn. Elsewhere, two-time Stanley Cup champion goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky agreed a three-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs at an average annual value of 7 million dollars, a significant addition between the pipes.
Several teams moved to secure their foundations. Nico Hischier signed a five-year extension with the New Jersey Devils worth 11.7 million dollars per season, while Ivan Demidov, who led all NHL rookies with 62 points, committed to an eight-year extension with the Montreal Canadiens.
The Los Angeles Kings were active too, adding Erik Haula and Mats Zuccarello, while defenceman Bowen Byram signed a six-year extension with the Chicago Blackhawks.
