Magnus Carlsen remains world number one on the FIDE list, even after dropping 18 rating points, a reminder of both his enduring dominance and the relentless pressure from those chasing him. Among the risers, India's Praggnanandhaa R gained 15 points after winning Norway Chess 2026.
The tournament circuit produced plenty of drama. Alireza Firouzja won the Grand Chess Tour Super Rapid and Blitz in Croatia, coming through an Armageddon tie-break against Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
