The 2016-17 Premier League season was a thrilling one, with Chelsea ultimately emerging as champions. However, recent revelations have cast a shadow over their victory, raising questions about the legitimacy of their title win. Mauricio Pochettino, former manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has joined the chorus of voices calling for Chelsea to be stripped of their title due to secret payments made by the club to unregistered agents and third parties between 2011 and 2018.
According to a Premier League investigation, Chelsea made £47m in secret payments to seal transfers. The transfers included Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto'o, Willian, Ramires, David Luiz, Andre Schurrle, and Nemanja Matic. Four of those players - Hazard, Willian, Luiz, and Matic - were at the club during the 2016-17 season.
Pochettino believes that if Chelsea had admitted to breaking the rules, the Premier League title would have been awarded to Tottenham.
