In a significant development, Brighton striker Danny Welbeck is poised to join Chelsea after being given permission to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge. The move is part of new manager Xabi Alonso's efforts to bolster his team with experienced players, following two seasons where Chelsea had the youngest Premier League squad on record.
Welbeck, 35, has been a key player for Brighton since joining the club in 2021 on a free transfer from Watford. With 90 goals in 400 top-flight appearances under his belt, he is the leading scorer in the Premier League for Brighton and will undoubtedly bring a wealth of experience to Chelsea's squad.
This signing marks a shift in strategy for Chelsea, who have traditionally focused on youth development. However, with their inability to challenge consistently for major honours being attributed, in part, to this approach, Alonso is looking to inject some much-needed experience into the team.
The club has already made several high-profile signings this summer, including Granit Xhaka and Maxence Lacroix, both of whom are over 30 years old. Talks are also ongoing with Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, while Morgan Rogers, signed for a club record £117m from Aston Villa earlier this month, is another relatively experienced player in the squad.
However, with six senior strikers already on their books, it remains to be seen whether Welbeck's arrival will lead to some of his new teammates being loaned out or sold. Among those who could leave are Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu, while Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha, signed from sister club Strasbourg this summer, may also remain part of the squad.
